We often say that we make our own luck, but do we also make our own bad luck? According to bad luck superstitions from around the world, certain seemingly innocent actions can bring misfortune. Intrigued? Read on to learn more!

It is a well-known fact that our habits shape our lives and influence our destinies. Ancient spiritual practices have strongly upheld the belief that what we do and practice can impact our fortune and bring positive or negative energies. These energies can influence the flow of our abundance, the quality of our relationships, life situations, and our overall well-being.

Today, we will explore common superstitions from around the world and delve into some habits that can contribute to bad luck, failure, unhappiness, and financial loss. Instead of discussing well-known superstitions like breaking a mirror or walking under a ladder, we will focus on lesser-known superstitions rooted in ancient cultures and civilizations that may still hold relevance today.

So, let’s dive right in!

10 Bad Luck Superstitions Around The World

  1. Wishing Happy Birthday Before the Actual Birthday
In Germany, it is believed that wishing someone “Happy Birthday” before the actual birthday can bring bad luck and misfortune. They follow a custom called “reinfeiern,” where they gather before midnight to celebrate the birthday and start the celebration strictly at midnight.

  2. Gifting Yellow Clothes
Spanish mythology associates the color yellow with black magic, evil, and the Devil. Gifting someone saffron or yellow-colored outfits is considered a taboo in Spain. It is advised not to wear this color, especially during important events where luck is desired.

  3. Saying “Macbeth” in a Theater
In England, mentioning the name "Macbeth" inside a theater is considered bad luck. This superstition stems from the play’s popularity, leading to a belief that uttering its name inside a theater invites misfortune and bad reception for any show.

  4. Sailor Superstitions
Carrying a banana or whistling on a ship is considered bad luck in sailor superstitions. Changing a boat’s name is also believed to anger the sea god Poseidon. Legend has it that changing a boat’s name without removing all traces of the old name can lead to the wrath of Poseidon.

  5. Turning Your Mattress On a Friday
Turning your mattress on a Friday is believed to bring nightmares and bad dreams in some superstitions. Changing your bed on a Sunday is also considered to bring bad luck.

  6. Drinking Superstitions
In the Czech Republic, pouring one type of beer into a glass containing another type is believed to bring serious trouble and bad luck. In Argentina, combining wine and watermelon is considered dangerous and is best avoided.

  7. Complimenting a Baby
In Serbia, complimenting a baby with kind words is believed to attract bad energy and negativity to the child. Instead, calling them "ugly" or using similar terms is thought to bring good luck and positive vibes.

  8. Turning Over a Cooked Fish
In some regions of China, turning over a cooked fish while eating is considered bad luck as it symbolizes the capsizing of a boat. Using chopsticks is recommended as an alternative.

  9. Cutting a New Born Baby’s Nails
According to Welsh customs, cutting a newborn’s nails before they turn six months old is believed to bring bad luck. There is a warning that doing so may lead the child to become a thief in the future.

  10. Pointing At a Rainbow
In Navajo traditions, pointing at a rainbow is seen as disrespectful to the deities who created them. It is believed to invite their wrath in the form of bad luck and misfortune.

Superstitions of Bad Luck in Vedic Astrology

    • Cutting hair and nails at night, on a Tuesday, or on the eleventh day after a full moon or new moon is believed to anger the goddess Lakshmi, causing a blockage in the flow of money and prosperity.
    • Keeping broken glass panes, cracked mirrors, and useless electronics is thought to block the flow of positive energy, leading to stagnation and financial troubles.
    • Keeping one’s home and kitchen untidy and unorganized is believed to hinder the flow of positive energy and bring financial loss according to Vastu Shastra.
    • Keeping leaking pipes and unclean dishes is thought to bring financial troubles and attract malevolent energies into the household.
