Is the Urgent Need to Pee a Normal Part of Aging?
Men over 50 years old often face challenges related to urination that can be attributed to aging. While some symptoms may seem like typical signs of getting older, they could also indicate a more serious condition known as benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). Dr. Michael Ward, a family and sports medicine physician at Advocate Health Care, emphasizes the importance of not overlooking these signs.
Understanding Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH)
BPH, or enlarged prostate, is a common condition that affects most men as they age. It occurs when the tissue surrounding the prostate gland thickens, causing interference with the urethra’s ability to expel urine. This interference can result in various urination difficulties, such as a weaker stream, dribbling, or frequent bathroom trips.
Although some men may initially view BPH as a minor inconvenience, untreated cases can lead to complications like urinary tract infections, kidney stones, kidney damage, and even the inability to urinate without surgical intervention. It’s essential to address BPH early to prevent these complications.
Causes and Risk Factors
The exact cause of BPH is not fully understood, but researchers believe it may be related to hormonal changes similar to those experienced by women during menopause. In addition to aging, men with a family history of enlarged prostate, diabetes, heart issues, or obesity are at higher risk for developing BPH.
Diagnosis and Treatment
To determine if you have BPH, a physical examination and various tests, including urine and blood tests, may be necessary. If diagnosed, there are several treatment options available to manage symptoms, ranging from medications to dietary changes and minimally invasive surgical procedures.
Dr. Ward emphasizes the importance of working with your primary care physician to develop a personalized treatment plan based on factors such as your age, prostate size, and overall health.
