Preserving Sexual Function While Fighting Prostate Cancer
Receiving a prostate cancer diagnosis can raise concerns about the impact on sexual function. The prostate and its surrounding structures play vital roles in male reproductive health, including fertility and erectile function.

Fortunately, advancements in medical technology are enabling the 1 in 8 men diagnosed with prostate cancer to maintain their sexual and urinary function. Emerging minimally invasive treatments, such as prostate focal therapy, are designed to target only cancerous tissue while preserving healthy tissue.
Types of Focal Therapy
- Cryotherapy: Cold temperatures are used to destroy cancer cells through thin needles.
- High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU): High-energy ultrasound waves target cancerous tissues.
- Irreversible electroporation (IRE): Focused electrical currents are delivered to cancerous cells using imaging guidance.
Dr. Zachary Kozel, a urologist at Aurora Health Care, explains, “Focal treatments are tailored to specific areas of the prostate to minimize damage to critical structures like the neurovascular bundles and urethra, which are essential for erectile function.”
Unlike traditional treatments like surgery or radiation that can affect healthy tissue, focal therapy aims to minimize collateral damage and preserve functional aspects of the prostate.
However, not all patients are suitable candidates for focal therapy. Dr. Kozel notes, “Patients with extensive prostate cancer or metastatic disease may not benefit from focal therapy. It is most effective for those with less aggressive, localized prostate cancer.”
If you have questions about prostate health or the potential benefits of focal therapy, consult your healthcare provider for personalized guidance.
